Things Your Child Needs to Know About Dogs
- Leave dogs alone that are eating or chewing a bone. You wouldn't like it if someone acted like
they wanted your food or toys.
- Never play tug-o-war with a dog or puppy. The dog may think you are trying to dominate him,
or play too rough.
- If a dog is asleep wake him by calling his name. Touching him may scare him, and he may bite.
- Never hurt or tease a dog or puppy; animals have feelings just like you.
- Pat dogs only on their sides, not on the top of their heads, under their chest or under their chin.
- Never put your face in a dogs face, even to give a kiss. He may feel threatened and bite.
- Respect the dog’s quiet time. If your dog goes into his bed or crate, leave him alone to nap.
Consider his bed or crate his "room" and respect it.
- NEVER approach strange dogs, no matter what.
- Always ask the owner if it is OK before you pet a dog.
- A wagging tail does not always mean a friendly dog. A dog can be unhappy and still wag his tail.
- If a strange dog approaches, do not run. Stand very still like a frozen statue until the dog goes away.
- If a dog ever bites you, freeze like a statue, quick.
- If you want to pet a dog but the dog walks away from you; do not go after him.
Let dogs come to you.
- Never stare into a dog's eyes. Dogs feel threatened by your stare.
- Please do not scream around dogs, they have sensitive ears.
- Always be sure an adult is watching anytime you play with a dog.
